Spoiler-Free Review

“The Boy and the Heron” really shows why Studio Ghibli is leagues above other creators in animation. In classic Miyazaki fashion, some parts are confusing, but it seems like that’s on purpose. The visuals are beautiful, with classic Ghibli hand-painted art, dreamy touches, and lively movement. It truly is like watching art float off a painting. The style is comforting and awe-inspiring in a way words can’t describe, even though the same process has been seen in earlier Studio Ghibli movies. The formula is here, it works, and it hasn’t lost any of its beauty.

The characters are memorable and unique. The main character is stoic and mostly quiet, which ironically helps guide you through the film’s emotions. The artwork and animation capture the characters’ emotions, coupled with fantastic voice acting; the visuals hit and resonate with the audience, reinforced by the brilliant performances. The world-building is creative and deep, with themes that become more meaningful the more you think about them after the viewing. The movie starts a little slow, but once it picks up, it draws you in. The weird moments are fun and make you want to pay closer attention.

Macaila and I saw it at a Cinemark re-release, and afterward we spent a lot of time exploring the film’s meaning and cultural background. Learning about the symbolism made the experience even more enjoyable and helped me appreciate the story more. I can’t suggest this film highly enough. If it is re-released in a theatre near you, get tickets in advance and make a romantic evening of it.

Food and Drink Pairing

Most likely, you’ll be watching this at home, so prepare a warm, vibrant, and colorful meal with a glass of red wine. Sit down and save the Cheetos for an action movie. The long pauses in dialogue and beautiful artwork should be taken in without the sound of popcorn and fried snacks.
