A continuation of the Knives Out saga, Wake Up Dead Man begins from an unexpected perspective. We follow a Catholic priest assigned to a struggling parish in New York. The film remains focused on his viewpoint for an extended period before Daniel Craig makes his appearance, and this choice works exceptionally well. The world feels authentic, and the characters feel genuine. By the time the first death occurs, you already have a clear understanding of everyone involved. This approach flips the usual formula, where Benoit Blanc takes on all the detective work. Instead, the story unfolds naturally. Josh O’Connor leads the film and delivers an outstanding performance.
The movie strongly embraces religious themes, particularly those of Catholicism, and it does so unapologetically, which I appreciated. Father Jud openly shares his faith, and the film reinforces this visually. Light often highlights him during moments of hope or conviction, suggesting that his words come from a higher source. In contrast, Blanc embodies a shadowed grounded realism, skeptical, and secular. This visual and thematic contrast enhances the mystery and keeps the film engaging. With powerful performances, rich symbolism, and a clear message, the movie maintains its momentum throughout.
You’ll constantly question who’s lying and who’s capable of murder. Like any great Knives Out entry, sharp viewers can solve the mystery before the final reveal. If that’s your thing, you’ll have fun. Just know the risks. My girlfriend hates talking through films.
If you loved the original Knives Out, you’ll find that this film is much closer in tone to that than Glass Onion ever was. I believe it’s the stronger movie overall. Some might argue that the impressive cast doesn’t have enough to do, but I disagree. Each character serves a purpose, and most have moments to shine. I left the couch feeling satisfied.
My only real criticism? Watch the earlier films first. If this is your introduction to the series, Blanc’s entrance might feel disorienting. This movie assumes you already know who he is and will reward you if you do.
Surprisingly, a hearty meal pairs perfectly with the movie. Imagine enjoying a comforting Irish stew alongside an old-fashioned cocktail. For something simpler, prepare a charcuterie board to snack on throughout the film. Add a playful twist with a mystery popcorn bowl featuring a mix of sweet and savory flavors. Use toothpicks in the cheese section to resemble clues or evidence, adding a touch of intrigue to your spread. Don’t forget the dark chocolate and some orange creams as well, for a key piece of the movie.
