Spoiler-Free Review

Marty Supreme is truly a work of art. Although some may criticize it for being overly busy or too popular, I genuinely believe this is Josh Safdie’s finest creation. It feels like we’ve entered an unofficial trilogy of manipulative hustler characters battling to survive in a greed-driven world, and this film is the third installment. If you enjoyed Good Time and Uncut Gems as much as I do, you absolutely HAVE to check out this film.

In the story, Timothée Chalamet portrays the main character, Marty Mauser, who embarks on an odyssey to reclaim his pride. Throughout the narrative, Marty comes across as arrogant and selfish, yet there’s something about him that makes you want to cheer him on. He possesses an extraordinary ability to shape his own destiny through sheer will and determination, even while he continues to make choices that hinder his progress.

The performances by actors like Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A’zion, and even Kevin O’Leary are surprisingly genuine. Much like in “Uncut Gems,” every character feels vibrant and authentic; there’s not a single performance that seems out of place or lacking sincerity, reflecting the entire cast’s dedication. Although the lineup might initially seem eclectic, each actor truly finds their footing in their roles. This film ultimately becomes a grand performance piece, rich in character-driven drama. The ping pong scenes serve as the icing on the cake, pulling you into the intense competitive spirit of the main character.

This movie may not be for everyone, but Macaila and I really enjoyed it, so I recommend giving it a shot and taking your girlfriend along. Some might find it a bit overwhelming, but considering how short attention spans seem to be these days, it makes every moment count despite its runtime. “Marty Supreme” is an instant classic, and I believe Timothée Chalamet delivers his best performance yet.

Food and Drink Pairing

Think of New York or classic diners, and you’ll have the perfect pairing. The first things that come to mind are red wine, like a Chianti, and New York-style pizza. The mesh match of the two fits the characters and set pieces, and will make the at-home movie experience that much better if you are unable to see it in theatres.
